Tour Overview

Your Morocco journey

Discover the landscapes between Fes and Marrakech on this private five-day desert journey through Merzouga and southern Morocco.

The route begins in Fes and travels south through Ifrane and the Middle Atlas Mountains. Continue toward Midelt and the Ziz Valley as green mountain scenery gradually changes into dry valleys, palm groves and the landscapes of southeastern Morocco.

Arrive in Merzouga beside the Erg Chebbi dunes and spend your first night near the Sahara. The slower pace means you do not need to begin the camel trek immediately after the long road journey from Fes.

Your second day is dedicated to the Merzouga desert area. Spend time discovering the surroundings of Erg Chebbi before riding a camel across the dunes later in the day. Enjoy the changing colors of the Sahara and spend the night at a desert camp.

From Merzouga, continue west through Rissani toward Todra Gorges. Walk between the dramatic canyon walls before traveling onward through the Dades Valley, where mountain scenery and traditional communities replace the open desert landscape.

The fourth day gives you more time in southern Morocco. Travel from the Dades region toward Ouarzazate and continue to the Ait Ben Haddou area, where you spend the final night before Marrakech.

On the fifth day, explore Ait Ben Haddou before crossing the High Atlas Mountains toward Marrakech.

This five-day desert tour from Fes to Marrakech is designed for travelers who prefer a slower journey with more time around Merzouga, the Dades Valley and southern Morocco. Compared with shorter routes, it reduces the need to combine too many major stops into the same day.

1

Day 1

Fes – Ifrane – Middle Atlas – Midelt – Ziz Valley – Erfoud – Merzouga

Your five-day desert journey begins with morning pickup in Fes.

Leave the city and travel south toward Ifrane before entering the landscapes of the Middle Atlas Mountains.

The first part of the route passes through greener mountain scenery, forested areas and small communities.

Continue toward Midelt, where time can be allowed for a break before traveling farther south.

As the road continues, the surroundings gradually become drier and more open.

Reach the Ziz Valley and enjoy views across its long palm groves, surrounded by rocky mountains and dry landscapes.

Continue through the Errachidia and Erfoud areas toward Merzouga.

Arrive beside the Erg Chebbi dunes later in the day.

Because this five-day itinerary allows more time, there is no need to begin the camel trek immediately after the long drive from Fes.

Check into your accommodation, enjoy your first views of the Sahara and spend a relaxed evening near the dunes.

Spend the first night in Merzouga.

Day 2

Merzouga Desert Exploration – Erg Chebbi – Camel Trek – Sahara Camp

Today is dedicated to the Sahara and the landscapes surrounding Merzouga.

After breakfast, spend time discovering the Erg Chebbi area instead of immediately continuing toward another destination.

Depending on the day's arrangements and your interests, explore different desert landscapes and enjoy more of the surroundings beyond the main village.

The slower schedule gives you time to appreciate the desert atmosphere before the evening camel trek.

Later in the afternoon, prepare for your ride across the dunes.

Travel by camel over the golden Erg Chebbi landscape as the sun begins to move lower over the Sahara.

Depending on weather and timing, stop to enjoy the changing evening colors before continuing toward your desert camp.

After arriving at camp, enjoy dinner and spend the night surrounded by the quiet dunes and open desert sky.

The full day around Merzouga is one of the main advantages of choosing a longer desert itinerary from Fes.

Day Highlights

  • Full day around Merzouga
  • Explore the Erg Chebbi desert area
  • Discover different Sahara landscapes
  • Enjoy a relaxed pace before the camel trek
  • Camel ride across the dunes
  • Experience the evening desert light
  • Dinner at the Sahara camp

Day 3

Merzouga – Rissani – Todra Gorges – Dades Valley

Wake up in the quiet surroundings of the Sahara.

If you wish, rise early to experience the morning light over the Erg Chebbi dunes before breakfast.

Leave Merzouga and begin traveling west through southeastern Morocco.

Pass through the Rissani area before continuing toward Tinghir and Todra Gorges.

The landscape changes as the open desert gives way to rocky mountains, palm-filled areas and deep valleys.

At Todra Gorges, take time to walk between the impressive canyon walls and enjoy the natural surroundings.

After the visit, continue toward the Dades Valley.

The road passes through traditional communities, mountain scenery and changing rock formations before reaching the Dades area.

The shorter driving stage today gives you more time to enjoy the route instead of simply passing through.

Enjoy dinner and spend the third night in the Dades Valley.

Day Highlights

  • Optional early Sahara sunrise
  • Breakfast before leaving Merzouga
  • Travel through the Rissani area
  • Continue toward Tinghir
  • Visit Todra Gorges

Day 4

Dades Valley – Southern Morocco – Ouarzazate – Ait Ben Haddou

After breakfast, leave the Dades Valley and continue west through southern Morocco.

Today's journey is intentionally shorter than combining the entire route to Marrakech in one day.

Travel through changing valley landscapes, traditional communities and dry mountain scenery toward Ouarzazate.

Spend time in the Ouarzazate area before continuing toward Ait Ben Haddou.

Arrive near the historic fortified village with more time available than on a faster desert itinerary.

Depending on your schedule, begin exploring the surroundings or save the main visit for the following morning.

The additional overnight stop gives you a more relaxed experience of this part of southern Morocco before crossing the High Atlas Mountains.

Spend the fourth night in the Ouarzazate or Ait Ben Haddou area.

Day Highlights

  • Breakfast in the Dades Valley
  • Travel through southern Morocco
  • Enjoy changing valley scenery
  • Continue toward Ouarzazate
  • Spend time in the Ouarzazate area
  • Travel toward Ait Ben Haddou
  • Enjoy a slower southern Morocco experience
  • Overnight near Ouarzazate or Ait Ben Haddou
5

Day 5

Ait Ben Haddou – High Atlas Mountains – Marrakech

Enjoy breakfast before beginning the final day of your journey.

Visit Ait Ben Haddou and take time to discover its traditional earthen architecture and historic fortified setting.

Because you stayed nearby the previous night, the visit can be enjoyed without combining it with the long road from the Dades Valley on the same morning.

After exploring Ait Ben Haddou, continue toward the High Atlas Mountains.

Cross the mountain range along a scenic road surrounded by valleys, traditional villages and wide views.

Stops can be made for photos, rest and meals depending on your schedule.

As you travel farther west, the mountain scenery gradually gives way to the plains surrounding Marrakech.

Arrive in Marrakech later in the day.

Your five-day desert journey ends after traveling from Fes through the Middle Atlas Mountains, Merzouga, the Sahara Desert, Todra Gorges, Dades Valley, Ouarzazate and Ait Ben Haddou.

Final drop-off can be arranged according to your accommodation or onward travel plans in Marrakech.

Day Highlights

  • Breakfast near Ait Ben Haddou
  • Explore the fortified village
  • See traditional earthen architecture
  • Begin the journey toward Marrakech
