5-Day Desert Tour from Marrakech to Merzouga

Your private 5-day desert tour begins with pickup in Marrakech. Leave the city behind and travel into the High Atlas Mountains, following the mountain road through villages and dramatic scenery. There will be opportunities to stop for photographs and short breaks.

Continue to Ait Ben Haddou, the historic fortified village known for its traditional earthen buildings. After time to explore, follow the route through Ouarzazate and the landscapes of southern Morocco toward the Dades Valley.

Arrive in the Dades area for dinner and your first overnight stay at a hotel or riad. The first day introduces the mountains, kasbahs and valleys that make the journey to Merzouga memorable.

After breakfast, continue through the scenery of southeastern Morocco toward Todra Gorges. Stop to explore the impressive canyon, where steep rock walls rise above the riverbed and walking areas.

The route then heads toward Merzouga, the village at the edge of Erg Chebbi. As you approach, the landscape changes from rocky valleys and small settlements to the golden dunes of the Sahara.

In the afternoon, prepare for a camel trek across the dunes, timed when possible for the softer light before sunset. Enjoy the desert views, then continue to your Sahara camp. Dinner and your second night are spent at the desert camp near Merzouga.

Wake up in the Sahara and, if you wish, rise early to see the sunrise over the dunes. After breakfast, leave the desert camp and begin a slower day devoted to the Merzouga area.

Visit Khamlia, a nearby village known for its local musical traditions, and spend time discovering the communities and landscapes around Erg Chebbi. With no long transfer scheduled, there is room in the day for breaks, photographs and enjoying the desert atmosphere. Optional off-road excursions can be discussed separately when planning the tour.

Later, check in at a riad in the Merzouga area. Your third night is in the riad rather than a second night at the camp, giving you a different way to experience the Sahara region.

After breakfast at your riad, leave Merzouga and begin the return journey west through southern Morocco. Pass through Rissani, a historic town with longstanding trading connections to the desert region.

Continue across the dry landscapes toward Nkob and the Draa Valley. The route offers a different perspective from the way to Merzouga, with rocky hills, traditional settlements and stretches of palm groves. Stop along the way as timing and road conditions allow.

Arrive in Ouarzazate later in the day and check into your hotel or riad. Spending the fourth night here breaks up the return to Marrakech rather than making the entire journey directly from Merzouga in one day.

Enjoy breakfast in Ouarzazate before the final stage of your five-day desert journey. Travel back toward the High Atlas Mountains, with opportunities for scenic stops along the route.

Cross the mountain landscapes as the road winds toward Marrakech. The exact timing of stops and arrival depends on traffic, weather and road conditions, so the day remains flexible rather than following an unrealistic fixed schedule.
