Nothing sounds more enticing than a trip to the Moroccan Sahara desert. Your wish is granted with this Sahara Tour from Fes in which you’ll see the towns, landscapes and sand dunes of Erg Chebbi and Merzouga town.
To begin the Sahara Tour from Fes, pick-ups are made from the Fes airport or hotel at a convenient time. Our journey to Ifrane takes us through the village of Imouzzer, where we can admire the mountainous rural dwellings, heavy snowfall, and extremely low temperatures that characterize the area. We’ll also visit a cedar forest to observe the Barbary Macaques.
Before reaching the desert, we’ll have lunch in Midelt and cross the Tizi-n-Tilghmt pass and the Ziz river. Upon arriving in Merzouga in the afternoon, we’ll embark on a camel ride into the desert. As the sun sets, we’ll make our way to a high dune where we can witness the breathtaking view. After that, we’ll enjoy a lively evening of Berber drum singing and dancing beneath the starry sky at the desert camp, where dinner and overnight accommodations are included.
To catch a stunning sunrise in the middle of the desert, waking up early is a must. After breakfast, we ride camels back to Merzouga to meet our driver and start our day-long tour of the area. The Merzouga region boasts numerous breathtaking sights, such as dunes, natural lakes, mines, fossils, and stunning oases. Our tour in Merzouga kicks off with an off-road drive to an ancient eyeliner mine.
Then, we visit the nomads in their traditional handwoven tents before stopping by the Khamlia village, where we can enjoy Gnaoua music and dancing performances by the residents who hail from Sub-Saharan African countries such as Mali, Sudan, and Niger. After a delightful lunch, we take a leisurely stroll through a palm tree forest before driving to the picturesque Flamingo Lake, also known as Merzouga’s wild lake. Dinner and an overnight stay will be at a hotel.
After breakfast, your driver will be waiting for you as you ride camels back to Merzouga to begin our tour. Our first stop is Rissani town, the former headquarters of the Tafilalet authority, which is now a bustling regional commercial center with a vibrant souk on multiple days of the week. We will then head to Erfoud to visit one of the fossilized marble factories.
Afterward, we’ll continue our journey through the scenic Touroug and Tinjdad palm orchards to the Todra Gorges. These red canyons with towering rock walls are formed by the Todra River’s journey through the mountains and offer an exciting challenge for rock climbers.
Following lunch, we’ll continue our journey through Boumalne Dades to the Dades valley, stopping along the way to admire the “monkey fingers” rock formation and a lookout point on a mountain that offers a breathtaking view of the valley. We’ll spend the night in a hotel that offers meals and comfortable overnight accommodations.
After breakfast, we’ll continue our journey to Kalaa Magouna to witness the picturesque Rose Valley, where residents sell various rose products such as fragrances, rose water, and cosmetics during the annual Rose Festival held in May. Next, we’ll travel through Skoura’s palm groves to Ouarzazate, a popular filming location for many famous movies.
We’ll then visit Ait Benhaddou Kasbah, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a fortified village that has been featured in several films and TV shows, including Game of Thrones. From there, we’ll head to Marrakech through the Tizi-N-Tichka crossing and the awe-inspiring High Atlas Mountains, making stops at fascinating locations for lunch and photo opportunities. Finally, we’ll arrive in Marrakech and drop you off at the airport or your hotel.
