Itinerary of the Desert Tour from Marrakech to Fes

Day 1: Marrakech – High Atlas Mountains – Telouat Kasbah – Ait Benhaddou – Ouarzazate

The journey starts early in the morning with a pick-up from the airport or your Marrakech hotel. Following that, we cycle into the breathtaking High Atlas highlands and through the Tizi-N-Tichka pass.

Afterwards we’ll go to the famous Kasbah of Ait Benhaddou, a walled village that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Gladiator, Alexander, The Mummy, and Game of Thrones are among the films and television series that have included the Kasbah. Our next destination is Ouarzazate, often known as “The Gate of the Desert,” which we reach by car. You’ll be sleeping and dining at a hotel.

Day 2: Ouarzazate – Skoura – Amridil Kasbah – Rose valley – Dades Valley

We tour Ouarzazate after breakfast. We visit the Atlas Studios, where many great films were made, as well as the Taourirt Kasbah, a fortified mud fortress and one of Morocco’s most old and beautiful Ksars. From there, we travel east to Amridil Kasbah in Skoura, which is bordered by palm trees, and then to Kalaa Magouna, which is known for its Rose Valley. In May, a Rose Festival is celebrated, when people sell rose items ranging from fragrances and rose water to cosmetics. Afterwards, we travel via Boumalne Dades to Dades Valley. We’ll make a halt at the “monkey fingers” rock formation and a viewpoint on a mountain overlooking the Dades Valley. You’ll have dinner and sleep in Boumalne Dades at a hotel.

Day 3: Boumalne Dades – Todra Gorges – Erfoud – Merzouga

Following breakfast, we travel to Todra Gorges, where the Todra River created a huge canyon through the mountains, resulting in a towering red cliff-sided gorge. Afterwards we travel through the Touroug and Tinjdad palm groves.

We arrive to Merzouga in the Sahara desert in the late afternoon, when you change to camels to traverse the arid terrain. You will be taken to the top of a high dune to see the spectacular sunset. Next, we travel on to the luxury tent in the desert where you can listen to Berber drum music and dance around the campfire beneath a big open sky filled with stars.

The deluxe camp provides dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 4: Merzouga region – Khamlia – Erg Chebbi

You must wake up early if you want to see the stunning sunrise in the middle of the desert. Following breakfast, you return to Merzouga by camel to meet your driver. The day is spent touring the Merzouga area. Additional noteworthy local features include dunes, scenic lakes, mines, fossils, and lovely oases.

At Merzouga, we begin our adventure by driving off-road to an abandoned eyeliner mine. Next, we go to see the nomads in their handcrafted tents. The Khamlia hamlet will be our next stop, where you will watch Gnaoua music and dance exhibitions. Its people are from Sub-Saharan African nations. We stroll through a palm tree forest after lunch before heading to Merzouga’s wild lake.

Day 5: Merzouga – Rissani – Erfoud – Midelt – Azrou – Ifrane – Fes

You get up early in the morning in the midst of the desert to see the dawn. Your driver will be waiting for you after breakfast as you ride camels back to Merzouga. Following that, we leave the desert to visit Rissani, Tafilalet’s ancient capital. Rissani, with its busy souk, is still an important economic centre in the region today. After touring the Rissani souk, we head to Erfoud to see one of the fossilized marble manufacturers.

We cruise along the Ziz river, stopping sometimes to admire the panoramic view of the Ziz valley. After lunch in Midelt, we head to the cedar forest to see the Barbary Macaques. Feel inclined to feed them as you go around the forest.

Following that, we travel to Ifrane, which is noted for its chilly weather, snow, and alpine-style homes. That is why, it’s referred to as Morocco’s Switzerland. Afterwards, we will transport you to the Fes airport or your accommodation.
